The educational map that follows is a personal, growing, and inherently biased being. This is for sure. I started with a basic map, the central layer; Bias. I depicted on a timeline the education that I deemed important, the courses that I remembered and felt impacted the way I think and design, the titles of essays and studio projects that I am proud of and were a product of my contemporary thinking. I added in the people whose words still affect my design method today. The timeline includes aspects of my high school education and references to my personal life that could be reflected in my design. This primary timeline thus expresses the answers to; Why do I Design? How do I Design? How Should I Design? This last question is one that I strive to answer through my thesis research. I included this on the timeline as a future piece to my education. I added the next layer, Consequence, as a dive into the elements I was pointing to in the timeline. I scanned the documents that I had produced, and read through the notes I made in my sketch book and pulled out the collection of texts that illustrate the themes and concepts of the projects. I highlighted the ones that seemed to be recurring, and from these accentuated elements constructed the final layer; Quintessence. This lexicon layer is the structure upon which my education stands. It is the influence that I exert upon my education, as well as the product. There is a similar interaction between the first and second layers. I constructed the first layer, Experience, behind the timeline as the visual context and product of my design. By illustrating, literally, the key concepts of my design, and the key elements in what I was seeing, the second layer starts to expose what was important to me within the visual context. The second layer, Communication, exposes the meaning behind the first layer. Is all this map a cumulative product of the education I have had or something that came from me? The answer to this question lies in the title: Sorcery. In I Swear I Saw This, Tausig defines it as the embodiment of chance and free will (2011). From the process of the mapping I have concluded that my education is, in essence, Sorcery; a combination of the chance in meeting professors and taking specific courses, and my own free will that pushed me to hold onto the information that I thought was important, and decide to study the aspects of architecture that held true to my own being. I start by saying that this map is biased because it comes from me. Each layer was constructed with my previous experience in mind, my soul, my reality. This is true for the entirety of my education.
